Effective Baseball Off Season Workouts

Effective Baseball Off Season Workouts
By guest author: Guido Nussbaum

Many athletes like to keep themselves in shape at all times, but this is especially true whenever they are actually playing the game. It is important, however, for you to make sure that you are ready for the upcoming season and that you do not allow yourself to fall into disrepair while the game is not being played. This is true, regardless of what type of sport you play but many people that play baseball feel that exercising in the off-season gives them an edge whenever it comes time to step onto the field again. Here are some effective baseball off season workouts which you may find beneficial.

One of the most important things for you to consider in this regard is going to be the position that you play. An outfielder, for obvious reasons, is going to have to do a different type of workout than the pitcher may do. However, they can all benefit from an overall workout plan that will help to keep them lean and in shape. This is often done through a regular routine of weightlifting, along with effective cardiovascular workouts. Here is the basic way that this is done.

As far as the weightlifting is concerned, there are some considerations for the various positions that are played but almost anybody can benefit from a short routine of multi-joint exercises. The reason why this is the case, is because it allows you to effectively work out more of the body in less time and these exercises also help you to build muscle and in a much faster way. Multi-joint exercises workout more muscles of the body, unlike bicep exercises or something similar which only concentrate on one muscle group. When you do multi-joint exercises effectively, you really assist your body in growing in all areas.

Cardiovascular exercise is also a very important part of any effective baseball off season workout. The type of cardiovascular exercise that you are doing, however, may differ depending upon your position. For the most part, however, short bursts of activity are what is going to be necessary in order to get you in shape for the field and for this, you will need high-intensity interval training. This is where you go hard for a period of time, typically one minute, and then go easy for an equal or longer amount of time. Cycle through this for 8 to 10 sets on any piece of exercise equipment and you will quickly gain cardiovascular endurance.

Of course, you don't need to play baseball regularly in order to benefit from this type of baseball off season workouts. As a matter of fact, anybody that would like to lose weight, get in shape or stay in shape can benefit from doing these combination of exercises. The real key is to be consistent in your efforts and to make sure that you're constantly progressing in the exercises that you are doing. This will not only help you if you decide to step out on the field in the spring, but it will also assist you in looking good all year long.

Teaching Youth Baseball

Teaching Youth Baseball
By guest author: Trevor Sumner

Teaching youth baseball is a rewarding experience for both parents and coaches alike. While parents have an obvious investment in the teaching of the fundamentals of the sport of baseball to their children, coaches, make a significant investment of their own in time, effort and emotion. From a personal perspective, one of the greatest rewards is in developing relationships with and positively affecting the lives of individual youth baseball players. The lessons of sports such as in baseball are positive and well documented. For coaches, there are also the internal rewards they get from seeing each player develop and from watching a youth baseball team improve as a group and learn to play together under their coaching tutelage.

Astute coaches improve the performance of the team as a whole by employing youth baseball drills to improve the individual performances of team players and there interactions together. There are three main categories in which youth baseball drills will have an immense effect on the performance levels of players. Read more.

Teaching Baseball Rules and Skills to Your Child

Teaching Baseball Rules and Skills to Your Child
By guest author: Joseph Pressley

Baseball games are sports events that you would love to watch. How the game is played gives you unexplained excitement and thrill. The object of baseball is to score more runs than the opposition and the strategy lies in the continuous struggle between the offense and the defense. If you want to teach your child how to play baseball and enjoy quality time with him through sports then you can do it with the help of the information on the basic skills of this game.

Basically, in throwing, the ball is usually gripped with the thumb on one side and the index and middle fingers on the opposite side. The pressure of the fingers on the ball must be relatively equal to the amount of force of the throw. There are three types of throw, overhead throw, side throw and underarm throw. They vary based on the distance of the person throwing the ball and the person who will catch it. Not only is distance important in using tazer stun gun but it is also critical in this kind of game. Baseball Coaching Tips - Running A Baseball Tryout

Baseball Coaching Tips - Running A Baseball Tryout
By guest author: John Peter

If you need a tryout format for your league, All-Stars, or for an individual team, here are some good guidelines that are flexible and give coaches a good idea of the players' abilities.

Make sure you run them. Whatever distances your bases are, make sure they run a dash from home to first and a dash from home to second. Time and log everything!

HINT: Run them side by side if you are running in the outfield. The competition makes for better times.

Hitting will make or break a team. Have a coach or a consistent pitching machine throw about 10 pitches to every player. Giving only 3 or 4 pitches may eliminate some good hitters. Don't always look for the guy who can knock one over the fence if he strikes out a lot. Look for the guys who hit the ball hard, hopefully gap doubles. While some players are hitting, make sure you have other groups doing something else, such as running or fielding. Don't put all the guys on the field and have them play a game.....yet. When picking your team, always pick the guy that may hit for average and hopefully, some power. Remember, base hits will win you more ball games than the occasional long ball.

Fielding.... When hitting to them, make sure you hit pop ups, grounders, line drives, slow rollers, and make them go right and left. I would take a guy who is a below average hitter and an above average fielder rather than a good hitter and a poor fielder (you just run out of places to hide them on defense, especially if you have more than one of this type of player). Offense wins games but pitching and defense prevents losses. Another potential problem to avoid is the guy that is very limited to one position. This absolutely will hurt you more than you can imagine. You will find yourself realigning an entire team's defense when that one catcher-only or 1st baseman-only player is on your roster.
Let me list what positions need what attributes:

Catcher- Needs to be a very loud, aware take charge guy; May be even the smartest and most baseball-knowledgeable player on your team. You can't have a slow catcher, he must be agile and quick. If not, sooner or later it will come back to haunt you.

1st baseman- Also can't be very slow or it will hurt you. He must be able to cover some ground as more infield errors occur from bad throws than missed balls!

2nd baseman- Quick hands and quick feet. Doesn't have to be very big so he needs to be able to make contact at the plate especially if he is small and doesn't bring too much pop with the bat.

Shortstop- The leader of your infield and very quick and hopefully, fast. If he can't cover the whole left side of the infield, than he should be a 2nd baseman. Should be very athletic and maybe your leadoff or #2 hitter.

3rd baseman- Strong arm, doesn't have to be the quickest but should be able to cover the line because your shortstop will cover to his left if he can't reach it. The older the player, the more he is looked at as a power guy.

Left Fielder- Should be able to charge in very well because he needs to play deeper than most of your outfielders due to so many right-handed pull hitters. Doesn't need the best arm but couldn't hurt.

Center Fielder- Good to great arm, should be one of the best and quickest athletes on your team. If he can't cover much ground, don't pick him or put him in left or right if he has a superior arm. He gives the corner outfielders confidence. Remember...the game is won "Up the Middle"!

Right Fielder- Big arm, needs to make the longest throws on the field. Again, the older the player, the more he is expected to hit for power. Doesn't need great speed, covers limited amount of ground.

Always watch players warm up and practice when they are not "in the spotlight;" that will tell you a lot about how they play.

Always make sure most of your team can pitch or catch. You can never run out of those. Pitchers at the younger levels tend to be the most athletic and/or advanced players.

In the end, play a game. Here's the best idea I have. Line them up and number off by threes. The 1's hit, the 2's play infield, and the 3's play outfield. A coach or machine pitches. Start them with a 1 ball and 1 strike count to speed it up. Pitch average fastball speed for the age group, nothing on either extreme. You will see a lot of repetitions, situations etc. and the guys will relax and have some fun.

Remember, kids know how to play, some just don't "test" as well as others.

Coach JP's Note:

When evaluating baseball talent...

Think Arm Speed, Bat Speed, Foot Speed

And never forget, attitude, and all that that implies.

Little League Baseball Drills - Coaching Your Team to Success

Little League Baseball Drills - Coaching Your Team to Success
By guest author: Jack Perconte
It is easy for little league baseball coaches to get overwhelmed with all the baseball drills available at their disposal. Using too many drills can lead to confusion and the feeling that players are getting a little taste of everything but not enough of one thing. To prevent this from happening, little league baseball coaches should choose three or four drills in the areas of hitting, fielding and throwing and stick with them until players have mastered the drills, or until the players become totally bored with the same baseball drills.

Some drills are difficult for young players because they may not have the skill level or strength necessary to perform them. It is important that little league coaches pick baseball drills that are challenging but achievable for the little league ball player. Coaches should pay strict attention that the prescribed drills are done as correctly as possible. It is also advised that little league coaches explain clearly why the drills are necessary and the results that will eventually occur when players stick with the drills.

Following are 3 little league baseball team drills that I would recommend for each of the areas of hitting, fielding and throwing.

Little League Hitting Drills

1. Place an object to the opposite side of home plate that a hitter stands and a couple of feet forward of home. Have hitters see that object after contact and before looking to see where their ball was hit.
2. Alternate fast pitch and slow pitches throughout batting practice. Overtime, this method will help hitters understand that they must stay back, see the ball but also be quick and maintain the same swing on all pitches.
3. Play an occasional team intra-squad game using the batting tee. Hopefully, this use of the tee will emphasize the importance of using it and spur more practice with the batting tee.

Little League Fielding Drills

1. Have the first baseman raise a number up with their non-glove hand after a fielder catches the ground ball. The fielder of the ball is required to yell the flashed number out as they are preparing to throw. This fielding drill will help players concentrate on the target and begin to eliminate throwing errors.
2. Take infield practice using any extra players as base runners so fielders get a better sense of the time they have to throw batters out at first. Runners should be allowed to advance on errors and overthrows. This will also give players a chance to run the bases more. Of course, runners should wear helmets.
3. Work on drills for calling fly balls and pop ups as often as possible, requiring players to yell and not whisper when calling for balls. Learning how to communicate on the ball field is essential for winning games. Teaching players which position takes priority on balls that are called for by two different players is also essential to avoiding injuries.

Little League Throwing Drills
1. Having relay throwing drills is a great way to teach throwing accuracy under pressure. Additionally, players will learn how to catch the ball and turn correctly when performing relays, which can help teams win games.
2. Around the horn throwing (4 corners) seeing how long group can keep ball going without missing. Players can learn inside turns, double play turns and throws after tag plays, etc...
3. Line up players in outfield with a base runner tagging up from third and work on long toss by having fielder throw the ball home on caught fly balls. Have a cut off man in line is also helpful. Once again, this is a multi-purpose drill because other players are working on base running at the same time.

As mentioned, there are numerous baseball drills for the little league coaches to use. Above are just a few that I like because they often involve more than one player at a time and have a competitive factor in them, which makes them more fun and challenging to the little league player.
